What is Espresso Tonic?

A drink from the specialty-coffee scene.

Water with coffee flavouring would have been easier. Instead we grind real organic espresso beans and steep the cold brew slowly – over hours. You can taste the difference.

In bars, a hot espresso is pulled, chilled over ice and topped with tonic – a play of fine coffee notes and sparkling freshness that's become one of the most exciting trends in coffee. That's exactly the drink we've made ready to drink in a can: just open it, best served well-chilled from the fridge.

For the base, we make our cold brew ourselves. We grind the organic espresso beans from Mount Hagen and brew the coffee cold – so the caffeine comes straight from the espresso bean, just like a real espresso. To that we add a tonic component, made only with herbal extracts and natural flavourings. For anyone after something new – beyond energy drinks and iced coffee.

01

Real cold brew

Made ourselves from ground Mount Hagen organic espresso beans. No added flavouring for the coffee note.

02

Sparkling tonic

The tonic component is made only with herbal extracts and natural flavourings.

03

Alcohol-free & organic

Alcohol-free, EU organic certified. A wide-awake alternative to energy drinks & iced coffee.

The taste

First the fizz. Then the coffee.

Coffee with tonic sounds wrong, we know – which is exactly why all we ask is that you take the first cold sip. After that, the doubt is gone and the curiosity stays.

First

On top, the dry, sparkling freshness of the tonic: herbal bitters, a hint of citrus, lively carbonation, bright on the palate.

Beneath

Then the cold brew carries the coffee through: round and full, never burnt-bitter, never a milky latte.

No sugar rush like an energy drink, nothing heavy and milky like an iced coffee. Serve it ice-cold and what you're left with is a drink that's wide awake and cool at once – dry and grown-up.

Munich × Hamburg

A Bavarian aperitivo that sources its coffee in Hamburg. 800 kilometres away. A detour? Yes. More honest? Also yes. Munich is the home of the aperitivo, Hamburg the old coffee metropolis – and our espresso is made by Mount Hagen, the last coffee company at the historic trading address of the Speicherstadt (Hamburg's historic warehouse district). 800 km between aperitivo and coffee. In this can, they're two finger-widths apart.

Origin & quality

From Bavaria. With organic coffee by Mount Hagen.

Espresso Tonic is made by Aperitivo Kollektiv GmbH (brand Sankt Sprizz) in Bad Aibling, in the Bavarian Alpine foothills. For the coffee we work with Mount Hagen – the last coffee company at the historic trading address of Hamburg's Speicherstadt.

Beyond the coffee and tonic, everything is pared back to the essentials: real cold brew, a tonic component from herbal extracts, organic cane sugar – alcohol-free and EU organic certified.

The founder

“We could have made it easier on ourselves. We didn't. I put my name on it: there's real coffee in here – not its flavouring.”
Johannes Schubert · Founder, Aperitivo Kollektiv GmbH

With Sankt Sprizz we put the Bavarian aperitivo in a bottle. Espresso Tonic is the next step: the café coffee trend – honest, organic, ready to drink in a can.

FAQ

Good to know

What is Espresso Tonic?

An alcohol-free soft drink from the specialty-coffee scene: cold-brewed espresso (cold brew) meets sparkling tonic water. We make the cold brew ourselves from ground Mount Hagen organic espresso beans and combine it with a tonic component from herbal extracts – ready to drink in a 250 ml can.

What does Espresso Tonic taste like?

First comes the dry, sparkling freshness of the tonic with herbal bitters, citrus and lively carbonation. Beneath it sits the cold brew from organic espresso beans, round and full, never burnt-bitter and never a milky latte. The result is bright, sparkling and grown-up in its dryness – no sugar rush like an energy drink and nothing milky like an iced coffee, best served ice-cold.

Does Espresso Tonic contain alcohol?

No. Espresso Tonic is alcohol-free – a refreshing alternative to energy drinks and iced coffee.

Is Espresso Tonic organic?

Yes. Espresso Tonic is EU organic certified (organic control body DE-ÖKO-006). The espresso comes from organic espresso beans by Mount Hagen.

Is there a caffeine-free Espresso Tonic?

Yes. There are two varieties: with natural caffeine (straight from the espresso bean) and decaffeinated, from decaffeinated Mount Hagen organic espresso beans.

How much caffeine is in Espresso Tonic?

Around 40 mg per can – the caffeine comes straight from the ground Mount Hagen organic espresso, roughly like an espresso and far less than an energy drink. The decaffeinated variety contains virtually none. You'll find the exact figure on the can.

How many calories does Espresso Tonic have?

33 kcal per 100 ml – that's around 83 kcal per 250 ml can. Pleasantly light and refreshing.

Does Espresso Tonic contain sugar?

Yes, a little organic cane sugar – but far less sweet than an energy drink. No sugar rush: Espresso Tonic tastes dry and grown-up, not sticky-sweet.

What's the difference between Espresso Tonic and an energy drink?

Espresso Tonic is a real coffee drink: the caffeine comes from genuine organic cold brew, not from synthetic caffeine and sugar syrup. It's alcohol-free, EU organic and free of any sugar rush – a wide-awake, grown-up alternative to energy drinks and iced coffee.

Where does Espresso Tonic come from?

Espresso Tonic is made by Aperitivo Kollektiv GmbH (brand Sankt Sprizz) in Bad Aibling near Munich – in partnership with the organic coffee partner Mount Hagen from Hamburg. So Munich, the home of the aperitivo, meets Hamburg, Germany's coffee metropolis.

Is there a deposit on the can?

Yes. Each 250 ml can carries a €0.25 DPG one-way deposit (the German deposit scheme).
