Espresso Tonic › Caffeine
Caffeine · Facts & comparison
How much caffeine is in Espresso Tonic?
The short answer: mixed yourself with a double espresso, around 80 mg – our ready-to-drink 250-ml can, around 40 mg. That's roughly a single espresso, and about half an energy drink. Here's the full comparison.
Caffeine compared
Typical values based on EFSA reference figures (European Food Safety Authority); actual contents vary depending on preparation and product. For the Espresso Tonic can, the figure on the can applies.
Where the caffeine comes from
Our can contains no added, synthetic caffeine – only the natural caffeine from cold-brewed coffee made with ground Mount Hagen organic espresso beans (Arabica). That's why the can sits at a moderate 40 mg or so: enough for an alert afternoon, without the evening crash. The difference from an energy drink? No synthetic caffeine, no sugar spike – and 33 kcal per 100 ml.
How much caffeine is okay?
For healthy adults, EFSA considers single doses of up to 200 mg and up to 400 mg spread across the day to be safe. To put that in perspective: you'd have to drink ten cans of Espresso Tonic. And for the evening there's the decaf version – same taste, practically no caffeine.

Frequently asked
Caffeine questions, answered honestly
How much caffeine is in an Espresso Tonic?
Mixed yourself with a double espresso (60 ml): around 80 mg of caffeine. The ready-to-drink Espresso Tonic can (250 ml) sits at around 40 mg – about as much as a single espresso, and roughly half as much as an energy drink of the same size. The figure on the can is always what counts.
Is Espresso Tonic stronger than coffee?
No. A cup of filter coffee (200 ml), at around 90 mg, contains more caffeine than our 250 ml can with around 40 mg. Espresso Tonic is more the lighter, refreshing way to have coffee in the afternoon.
How quickly and how long does the caffeine take effect?
Caffeine typically enters the bloodstream within about 15 to 45 minutes; the effect fades over several hours – how quickly varies a great deal from person to person. If you're sensitive, the decaf version is the better choice from late afternoon on.
Is the decaf can really caffeine-free?
For all practical purposes, yes: it's brewed from decaffeinated Mount Hagen organic espresso beans and contains only traces of caffeine – like any decaffeinated coffee.
